An easy journey south
Finchampstead and Sandhurst are close neighbours in the same part of Berkshire. For most people the trip to my practice is around ten minutes, heading broadly south. As Finchampstead is quite spread out, your exact time will depend on where you start, but it rarely feels like a long way. I share the full address when we book your first session.
When a relationship needs attention
Perhaps your relationship is what brings you. It might be a partnership that has drifted into distance, arguments that go round in circles, or trust that has been shaken. Couples counselling can help you slow down and hear each other again.
I draw on tools such as Imago Dialogue, the 5 Love Languages, Gottman methods and techniques from Emotionally Focused Therapy. Some couples come to strengthen what they have; others come to part as kindly as possible. Both are welcome. If you are curious, my post What’s your love language? is a gentle place to start.
Individual support too
Of course, not everyone comes as part of a couple. I work with men and women on their own with anxiety, low mood, bereavement, stress, identity and the quieter sense that something is not quite right. My approach is integrative, so I adapt to you rather than asking you to fit a single method.
Sometimes one partner comes alone first, perhaps because the other is not ready, or because they want space to understand their own part in things. That is a perfectly good place to begin, and it can make any later joint work feel less daunting.
Choosing how to meet
Coming in person gives you a dedicated space away from the demands of home. For couples especially, sitting in a neutral room can make it easier to talk. On the other hand, online sessions can suit busy diaries or times when one of you is away. You can choose whichever feels right, and change later.
What happens at the start
After a free phone chat, we arrange a first session. In it we talk about what has brought you, what you would like to be different and how we will work together. Couples usually meet weekly at first and may later move to fortnightly or monthly sessions. Individual work is usually weekly, with regular reviews.
Looking at family patterns
Sometimes the difficulties between two people have roots that go back much further than the relationship itself. One tool I use with both couples and individuals is the genogram, a kind of family map that helps us notice patterns passed down through generations: how conflict was handled, how love was shown, what was never talked about.
Seeing these patterns laid out can be a real moment of recognition. It can bring more compassion, for yourself and for each other, and it can open up new choices about how you want to relate from here.
